Villette: Penguin Classics Customer Reviews

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Sciuto -- and you would think by now that I could not be anymore amazed by their brilliance than I was previously but : Charlotte Bronte's "Villette" is the sixth book I have read by the Bronte sisters, the third by Charlotte, and you would think by now that I could not be anymore amazed by their brilliance than I was previously but, once again, that was not the case. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from mialro -- Great book, but no English translations for the French parts : I am not the greatest at writing book reviews, so I will just say that Villette is an excellent book, but you shouldn't expect it to be just like Jane Eyre, although there are several parallels. If you liked Jane Eyre you might like this too, especially if you have experienced loneliness, unrequited love, and/or depression. It's less about plot than it is about the secretive narrator's mind. I took a break halfway through because it was very dense and slow going but I'm glad I read it. Mallory Ortberg's Introduction is also excellent and shed new light on the book for me. The cover art is lovely, a violet metallic on that cream pebbly paper, and the pages have deckle edges. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2015 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from EPC124 -- I Hate It : This was chosen (by a friend, no less!) for my book club so I was forced to read it. It's agonizingly slow, convoluted and - quite frankly - boring. I'm an avid reader and I usually read a book of this length in a few days. It's taken me weeks to get through this and I still have over 100 pages. I'm beginning to think Cliff's Notes might be an option. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Katherine Sartori, Author of THE CHOSEN SHELL -- A Lonely Woman in mid 1800s Finally Opens Herself to Love... : Though a 700+ page novel, I was determined to finish this classic which was chosen by my book group. In the end, I'm very glad I did. I like to learn about cultures in other eras and countries, and after reading the first 150 pages, I became engrossed in Lucie Snowe's observations of life as a single woman in France during the mid-1800s. She was a very unusual and lucky woman to secure a governess position and then become a teacher since, at the beginning of the story she is alone and penniless with no contacts or relatives, yet she boards an English ship bound for France without any job prospects at all. This is a woman who is distrustful and definitely aloof towards others and constantly observes the people around her at the boarding school where she teaches. I gradually grew to understand her fears and guarded desires. and I also learned how 19th century manners, traditions and class limitations demanded adherence to very different norms and customs than women enjoy now. Despite these constraints, eventually Lucie learns to open herself to the attentions of a professor who, at first, annoys her almost daily, yet gradually secures her friendship. I was rooting for Lucie at the end, wanting her to find intimacy and a secure profession upon which she could depend for her livelihood. A difficult challenge for females of that era. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle M -- Not one of her hits but a good novel : I have the audio book format from Naxos Audiobooks and it is an excellent version. The narrator Mandy Weston is professional with a crisp voice and she is able to clearly differentiate each character. The novel is good but was a little long and had too much dialogue in French which I do not speak so I had to guess what was said. It was an interesting story because it follows the life of Lucy Snow, a poor single woman who has no family and has to make her way in the world alone and she is able to not only succeed but thrive, which was unusual for a woman those circumstances to be portrayed in literature during that time. The book was slow but when I finished it I realised that I enjoyed the overall experience. Not one of the well known novels by Charlotte Bronte but it does deliver a strong heroine and a moving story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Katie Poole -- Unreadable : Please note, this review is for the Amazon-published copy only. Villette itself is a literary masterpiece which Amazon have done zero justice to in their own publication. I give it one star because the cover is pretty, which was what prompted me to buy this particular copy. I assumed it couldn't be hard to publish a literary classic whose text is already in the public domain. How wrong I was. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jason Mills -- Something for grown-ups to get their teeth into. : "Villette" is not so well known as "Jane Eyre", but it has much in common with it and is every bit as interesting. Our heroine and narrator is a young woman called Lucy Snowe: poor, possessed of no special talents, and left to her own resources, she takes a startling gamble with fate by sailing to France, and there finds a living as a teacher in the eponymous town. To avoid spoilers, I'll say only that we are much concerned with the men she meets. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2014 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Roberta -- Edição 2020 brochura da Martin Claret : Concordo que o livro está excessivamente grosso. Estas edições belas dessa editora deixam a desejar. ( Reviewed in Brazil on September 27, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sophie Cayeux -- Very enjoyable. Great character study. : When I started the book, I wondered how the story would keep my attention but Charlotte Bronte is such an author! She develops her characters to become so much part of my life that, in the end, I didn’t even want to let go of Lucy Snowe or any of those characters who were part of her world – although I was even told what happens to them until their death! Her study of human nature, motivation, behaviour and emotions is engrossing. She paints the inner and outer world of women in those days and sheds light into the rebellion of Lucy against the ideas prevailing at the time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2017 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Bobbie -- not a patch on Jane Eyre : Lucy Snowe, lacking friends and family, leaves England to look for a new life in Villette, a fictionalised Brussels, and takes up a teaching post. One of my book groups chooses a ‘meaty read’ each Jan/Feb, and this was our choice for this year. Not so much meaty as bloated. Yes, the Brontë voice is here, and there are some good passages (I particularly liked Lucy’s account of her feelings about being forgotten for seven weeks by her socialite friends), but for the most part I found myself asking wearily: what would be left if one took out the adjectives, the longwinded analyses of character (there was very little character in action, character-driven action) and the flights of Protestant religiosity. I was a third in before a chapter (The fete) hooked me with some mild drama and humour. All in all, not a patch on Jane Eyre. Lucy Snowe and Jane Eyre are similarly self-effacing young women, but I don’t remember Jane being so scorchingly judgmental, so prim and pinched. Also Jane had her heartrending childhood and adolescence to make us understand her and care about her, whereas we can only guess at Lucy’s family circumstances. I imagine her, like Brontë, to have lost her family to TB. Following Anne and Emily’s deaths, Charlotte's craft sags without her sisters’ critical input around that table in Haworth. The fire and passion that fuelled Jane Eyre seem sucked out of her. There’s only an echo of that passion, thwarted, disappointed, repressed, channelled into pious verbosity. It reads like a what-if-Charlotte-set-off-from-Yorkshire-herself fantasy that runs out of imagination and falls back on disguised autobiography. A thin narrative, plagued with coincidence and increasingly ludicrous daftness. A great storyteller who lost heart and ran out of material? I’m sympathetic, I still love Jane Eyre, but oh, the relief to reach the end of a long, dull book! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 13, 2017 )
